Axle-Back Systems
Axle-Back Exhaust Systems
A Distinct Borla Sound Note. Backed by the Million Mile Warranty.
The Axle-Back delivers a distinct Borla sound note with aggressive punch. It covers the rear mufflers, piping, and tips at a more accessible price point than a full Cat-Back system.
As with Borla Cat-Back systems, Axle-Back systems are available in ATAK®, S-Type, and Touring sound levels, allowing you to choose your preferred exhaust volume and character. All systems are built from T-304 stainless steel, are 50-state street legal, and are backed by the Million Mile Warranty.
Installation method varies by application. Some Axle-Back systems are direct bolt-on. Others require cutting the stock exhaust to allow the Borla system to clamp on. All required hardware and instructions are included in every kit.
Axle-Back vs. Cat-Back: Understanding the Difference
Both system types are a legitimate performance upgrade. The right choice depends on your platform, sound objectives, and how much of the undercar exhaust path you want to address.
| Feature | Axle-Back | Cat-Back |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Rear axle to tips — rear mufflers and tips only | Catalytic converter to tips — full undercar exhaust path |
| Mid-pipe included | No | Yes |
| X-Pipe / crossover | No | Yes (model dependent) |
| Sound upgrade scope | Moderate — rear section only | Maximum — full exhaust path tuning |
| Installation | Bolt-on or cut-and-clamp depending on application | Bolt-on or cut-and-clamp depending on application |

Why Borla Axle-Back
- T-304 Austenitic Stainless Steel: 18–20% chromium and 8–10.5% nickel content delivers superior corrosion and heat resistance compared to T-409 or aluminized alternatives. Every system is built from the same material grade used in aerospace applications.
- Tip Finish Options: Axle-Back systems are available in multiple tip finishes including polished T-304 stainless, black chrome, and carbon fiber black anodized (CFBA), depending on application.
- No Drone Technology: Borla's patented multi-core muffler design eliminates the resonance frequencies that cause cabin drone at highway cruise RPM, across all three sound levels, including ATAK®.
- Vehicle-Specific Engineering: Every Axle-Back system is calibrated to a specific year, make, engine, and drivetrain. No universal fitment. Each system is tuned for the acoustic characteristics of its exact platform.
- Active Exhaust Compatibility: On platforms with factory active valve systems, Borla offers dedicated Axle-Back SKUs that retain OE valve actuator functionality. Always confirm active exhaust compatibility when selecting your part number.
- Million Mile Warranty: Every Borla Axle-Back system is backed by the Million Mile Warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner.
- Made in the USA: Every system is designed, engineered, and manufactured in the United States.

An Axle-Back system replaces only the rear section from the axle back, covering the mufflers, rear piping, and tips. A Cat-Back system replaces the full exhaust path from the catalytic converter back, including the mid-pipe, crossover, resonators, muffler, and tips. The Cat-Back delivers a more comprehensive sound and flow upgrade because it addresses more of the undercar exhaust path. The Axle-Back is a more affordable solution that delivers a distinct Borla sound note with aggressive punch. Both are 50-state street legal and carry the Million Mile Warranty.
Installation method varies by application. Some Axle-Back systems are direct bolt-on. Others require cutting the stock exhaust to allow the Borla system to clamp on. All required hardware and instructions are included in every kit. Confirm the installation method for your specific part number at borla.com.
On platforms with factory active valve systems, Borla offers dedicated Axle-Back SKUs for both Active and non-Active configurations. These are separate part numbers and are not interchangeable. Always confirm active exhaust compatibility when selecting your part number, or use the fitment selector at borla.com.
Drone is the phenomenon of exhaust resonance matching cabin frequencies at highway cruise RPM, typically between 1,500 and 2,200 RPM, creating an uncomfortable sustained note inside the vehicle. Borla's engineering process includes extensive drive-cycle testing on each platform to identify and eliminate these frequencies through muffler core configuration and flow-path geometry. No Drone technology applies to all three sound levels, including ATAK®.
Yes. Borla Axle-Back systems are 50-state street legal. The system replaces only the rear mufflers, piping, and tips, leaving all factory emissions hardware completely intact. Your vehicle will pass a visual or functional emissions inspection just as it would with the stock exhaust in place.
Borla's Million Mile Warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser for the life of the vehicle, provided it does not exceed one million miles. It does not cover physical damage from road hazards, improper installation, or use on vehicles operating at power levels so far above factory specification that the exhaust is subjected to forces outside its design range. The warranty is not transferable to subsequent owners. Claims require proof of original purchase and are handled directly through Borla.
Borla Sound Levels
Borla Axle-Back systems are available in three sound levels. All share the same T-304 stainless construction and No Drone technology. Sound level availability varies by platform.
Deep and refined. Richer than stock with a composed tone at highway speeds.
The classic Borla tone. Aggressive under throttle, refined at cruise.
Maximum volume. Full-bodied, aggressive exhaust note with No Drone technology.
