Borla Cat-Back exhaust system

The term "Cat-Back" originated with Borla when we pioneered the concept in 1978. "Cat" is shorthand for catalytic converter. A Borla Cat-Back exhaust system replaces your entire stock system from the catalytic converters back to the tips exiting the bumper; mid-pipe, crossover, resonators, muffler, and tips.

Because the upgrade begins entirely downstream of the emissions catalyst, all factory emissions hardware remains completely intact. Borla Cat-Back systems are 50-state street legal with no impact on emissions compliance.

This type of system delivers the most dramatic exhaust upgrade available, incorporating Borla's ultra-smooth mandrel bends, X-Pipe technologies, pipe diameter specifications, and multi-core muffler tuning, all the variables that shape the sound of your engine. Systems are available across a wide range of cars and trucks in your choice of three sound levels: ATAK®, S-Type, and Touring.

Cat-Back vs. Axle-Back: Understanding the Difference

Borla engineers both Cat-Back and Axle-Back exhaust systems for a wide range of vehicles. Each is a legitimate performance upgrade; the right choice depends on your platform, your sound objectives, and how much of the undercar exhaust path you want to address.

Feature Cat-Back Axle-Back
Coverage Catalytic converter to tips - full undercar exhaust path Rear axle to tips - rear mufflers and tips only
Mid-pipe included Yes No
X-Pipe / crossover Yes (model dependent) No
Sound upgrade scope Maximum - full exhaust path tuning Moderate - rear section only
Installation Bolt-on or cut-and-clamp depending on application Bolt-on or cut-and-clamp depending on application
50-state street legal Yes Yes
Million Mile Warranty Yes Yes
T-304 stainless steel Yes Yes
Typical install time 2–4 hours 1–2 hours
Best for Maximum sound and flow upgrade from the cats back More affordable entry point for a distinct Borla sound note. Does not deliver the same full-bodied sound or flow improvement as a Cat-Back.

On vehicles without a factory service point behind the cats, a single cut may be required. Borla includes a cutting guide and all necessary hardware in every kit.

Why Borla Cat-Back

Borla Cat-Back exhaust system for C8 Corvette
  • T-304 Austenitic Stainless Steel: 18–20% chromium and 8–10.5% nickel content delivers superior corrosion and heat resistance compared to T-409 or aluminized alternatives. Every system is built from the same material grade used in aerospace applications.
  • Mandrel Bending: Every tube is mandrel-bent to preserve its full circular cross-section through every curve, maintaining consistent flow from catalyst to tips. Crush bending, common in lower-cost systems, deforms the internal profile at each bend and creates turbulence that reduces exhaust velocity.
  • No Drone Technology: Borla's patented multi-core muffler design and drive-cycle testing eliminate the resonance frequencies that cause cabin drone at highway cruise RPM, across all three sound levels, including ATAK®.
  • Vehicle-Specific Engineering: Every Cat-Back system is calibrated to a specific year, make, engine, and drivetrain. No universal fitment. Each system is tuned for the acoustic and flow characteristics of its exact platform.
  • Million Mile Warranty: Every Borla Cat-Back system is backed by the Million Mile Warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner.
  • Made in the USA: Every system is designed, engineered, and manufactured in the United States.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Cat-Back system replaces the full exhaust path from the catalytic converter back, including the mid-pipe, crossover, resonators, muffler, and tips. An Axle-Back system replaces only the rear section from the axle back, covering the mufflers and tips. Installation method varies by application. Some systems are direct bolt-on, while others require cutting the stock exhaust to allow the Borla system to clamp on. All required hardware and instructions are included. Both are 50-state street legal and carry the Million Mile Warranty. The Cat-Back delivers a more comprehensive sound and flow upgrade because it addresses more of the undercar exhaust path. The Axle-Back is a more affordable solution that delivers a distinct Borla sound note with aggressive punch. While it does not provide the same full-bodied sound as a Cat-Back, it is available in the same ATAK®, S-Type, and Touring sound levels.

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your vehicle warranty solely because you installed an aftermarket part. They must demonstrate that the aftermarket part caused the specific failure in question. A properly installed Borla Cat-Back system does not modify any emissions hardware and should not affect powertrain warranty coverage. Installation method varies by application. Some systems are direct bolt-on, while others require cutting the stock exhaust to allow the Borla system to clamp on. All required hardware and instructions are included. Confirm with your dealer before installation if coverage is a concern.

Drone is the phenomenon of exhaust resonance matching cabin frequencies at highway cruise RPM, typically between 1,500 and 2,200 RPM, creating an uncomfortable sustained note inside the vehicle. Borla's engineering process includes extensive drive-cycle testing on each platform to identify and eliminate these frequencies through muffler core configuration and flow-path geometry. No Drone technology applies to all three sound levels, including ATAK®. Even the loudest Borla system remains comfortable on a long-distance drive.

Yes. Borla Cat-Back systems are emissions-legal for street use in all 50 states, including California. Because the system begins downstream of the factory catalytic converter, all emissions control hardware remains completely untouched. Your vehicle will pass a visual or functional emissions inspection just as it would with the stock exhaust in place.

Yes, with the correct part number. On vehicles with factory active valve systems, such as Chevrolet's NPP on the C8 Corvette, Borla offers Cat-Back systems that retain the OE valve actuators for full exhaust volume control. These require valve actuator recalibration after installation on platforms such as the C8. Bypassing the valves without addressing the actuator wiring will trigger a dashboard warning light. Always confirm active exhaust compatibility when selecting your part number, or use the fitment selector at borla.com.

Borla's Million Mile Warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser for the life of the vehicle, provided it does not exceed one million miles. It does not cover physical damage from road hazards, improper installation, or use on vehicles operating at power levels so far above factory specification that the exhaust is subjected to forces outside its design range. Claims require proof of original purchase and are handled directly through Borla.
